Comparative Texts – ‘The Queen’ – Themes

Hey there kiddos –

Here is a reposting of the themes that we have been looking at in our discussions relating to THE QUEEN and RANSOM – we can start sorting out our initial responses to your viewing of THE QUEEN into the relevant themes:

  • LEADERSHIP

  • FAMILY vs. SOCIETAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • TRADITION & CHANGE

  • PERSONAL JOURNEYS

NB – some incidents/events/comments may fit into more than 1 theme (this is not a bad thing – they may be used as a segue from one idea to the next)

PLEASE REMEMBER THAT THE OVERARCHING CONCEPT THAT WE WILL BE EXPLORING IN OUR STUDIES OF THE QUEEN AND RANSOM IS HOW INFLUENTIAL INDIVIDUALS REACT TO/BEHAVE IN TIMES OF CRISIS

  • What were the reactions of the following to her death?
    • The Public

Please find the next piece of work relating to RANSOM to go on with below.

ACTIVITY: In your table groups, you will carry out table discussions/debates on the specified topic:

  • You will need to reference the work you have done previously on RANSOM
  • You will need to reference a range of different examples from the text to support your final perspective on the topic.

  • How do leaders view themselves/their responsibilities?
  • How do they respond to death and grief, and what possible social upheaval may occur because of their actions?

FAMILY vs. SOCIETAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • What are the public expectations of both Priam and Achilles? How do their personal responses to situations conflict with these expectations?
  • Do they try to balance their roles to their families with their duty?
  • Who do they rely on/turn to for advice? Do they follow this advice?

TRADITION & CHANGE:

  • What role does tradition play in the lives of Priam and Achilles?
  • In what ways do they challenge these traditions? Why do they do this?
  • What is Malouf saying about the notions of FATE and FREE WILL in this novel?
  • Are any of the changes that Priam or Achilles undertake on-going?

PERSONAL JOURNEYS:

Comparative Texts – ‘Ransom’ – some background information

Hey there kiddos –

  • The story of Troy is a mythical story & not necessarily based on an historical story – it is, however, recounted in the epic poem The Iliad.
  • RANSOM (2009) is a novel by Australian author David Malouf.  In this he retells/re-imagines part of the story of The Iliad from Books 22 to 24.

Please make sure that you make the delineation between the two of these.

Comparative Texts – Making predictions

Hey there kiddos –

It’s PREDICTION MAKING TIME!!

Watch the following movie trailers:

After each trailer, discuss what you expect to find in the texts we have for study in this unit.  Obviously you will also refer back to the backgrounding activities that we have been conducting as well as class discussions we have had to date in relation to this.

NB: For The Queen look at what directorial position might be being taken by Stephen Frears.

COMPARE your predictions for The Queen with the following excerpts from the film.  Are your predictions reinforced or does this make you change your opinions?

ESSENTIAL QUESTION ACTIVITY:

Make 2 separate lists:

  1. The Queen
  2. Ransom

Compare the lists – what predictions do they have in common?  What inferences can you draw from this?

Enjoy,
