Comparative Texts – ‘The Queen’ – Theme Analysis Activities

Hey there kiddos –

Here are the THEME ANALYSIS ACTIVITIES we will be doing for our initial study of THE QUEEN :

LEADERSHIP:

  • What types of leadership styles are Queen Elizabeth II and Tony Blair shown to employ in the film?
  • How are they influenced by family & public expectations? What are their responses to this?
  • How do leaders view themselves/their responsibilities?
  • How do they respond to death and grief, and what possible social upheaval may occur because of their actions?

FAMILY vs. SOCIETAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • What are the public expectations of Queen Elizabeth II? How does her personal response to situations conflict with these expectations?
  • Does she try to balance her role to their family with her duty?
  • Who does she rely on/turn to for advice? Do she follow this advice?

TRADITION & CHANGE:

  • What role does tradition play in the lives of Queen Elizabeth II and her Prime Minister?
  • In what ways is she forced to challenge these traditions? Why did she feel she had to do this?
  • What is Frears saying about the notions of TRADITION & CHANGE in this film?
  • Are any of the changes that Queen Elizabeth II makes to the way she operates on-going?

PERSONAL JOURNEYS:

  • What journeys (literal &/or figurative – emotional &/or physical) does Queen Elizabeth II go through?
  • How does this affect the way in which she sees the world/act?
